Summer is peak wedding season in Perth, and for good reason: long evenings, blue skies and warm nights. It also brings three things that shape how your photos and film turn out: strong heat, harsh midday sun and the afternoon sea breeze locals call the Fremantle Doctor. Plan around them and summer is the best time of year to be photographed.
The Heat
Perth summer days often climb into the high 30s, especially inland in the Swan Valley and the hills. Heat shows up on camera as flushed faces, tired eyes and wilting flowers.
Choose a ceremony spot with shade, or one where your guests aren't facing straight into the sun
Keep water, fans and blotting papers with the bridal party
Plan for sunscreen without visible strap lines, and allow a few minutes for touch-ups before portraits
The Light
WA doesn't have daylight saving, but summer sunsets are still late, around 7:20pm in midsummer. The middle of the day casts hard shadows under eyes. The hour before sunset is soft and golden, and it's when most of our favourite portraits happen. A late-afternoon ceremony, followed by portraits as the sun goes down, gives you the best of both.
The Fremantle Doctor
On most summer afternoons a cool south-westerly sea breeze arrives along the coast. It's a relief from the heat, but at beach and riverside ceremonies it can be strong.
Veils, hair and arbour decorations need extra pins and weights
Wind noise can drown out vows, so we use small microphones on the celebrant and couple to keep your words clear on film
Coastal portraits are often calmer in the morning or once the breeze settles towards dusk

A Sample Summer Timeline
Preparation indoors in the early afternoon, a ceremony from around 4:30 to 5pm, family photos in the shade straight after, then couple portraits from about 6:30pm into sunset. Our wedding day timeline guide shows how to build the rest of the day around it.
